In December 2015, a number of festive looking envelopes were randomly distributed across the UK. Each one had a message on the front inviting the finder to open them and read the contents. Within each of the envelopes was a story. A story about a man called Matt who was going through a difficult time. And then, in almost magical circumstances, he received a gift that changed his life. This same gift was inside the envelope. A tangible item that the author was handing over. It was a symbol of hope.
This was my project and I called it ‘find my story’. I wrote the short story inside the envelope and devised the concept of randomly distributing them. I believed that my festive fairy-tale would find just one person who would need a positive message at a difficult time of the year. It became so much more. Hundreds of volunteers. Thousands of envelopes. And most importantly, I was inundated with profound responses from people who found an envelope and it meant something to them.”
